Over is the second single to be released from Zarif’s eclectic pop debut, Box Of Secrets. Formerly signed to RCA, after collaborations with the likes of Groove Armada, Danny Byrd and The Nextmen, the talented singer/songwriter is playing by her own rules having set up her own ‘Bright Pink Records’ label last year. The independent route seems to be suiting her well, with fantastic album reviews from The Guardian (“The next big thing in British soul”), The Daily Star (“A music masterclass” ****) and The Evening Standard (“A refreshingly raw debut” ****). Zarif has also received support from BBC Radio 1 (Annie Mac, Mistajam), BBC Radio 2 (including Dermot O’Leary) and 1xtra (Ras Kwame)and secured TV slots such as GMTV and Sky News. With so much under her belt already, the time is right for her new single to welcome in spring with a bang.
Over showcases Zarif’s skill not only as a singer but also as a lyricist. What sounds at first like a typical break up song reveals itself to be a song about setting someone free. With the added punch of Zarif’s sassy delivery this makes for an uplifting twist on a classic subject. Zarif wrote this song herself on guitar and then brought it to UK super producer Fraser T. Smith (Nelly Furtado, Taio Cruz, James Morrison), who added his own unmistakeable pop magic transforming an acoustic soul song into this sing-along anthem.
The stylish Over video was directed by multi award-winning director Kinga Burza(Katy Perry, La Roux, Kate Nash). It perfectly brings out the summery feel of the track, and if you ever needed a video masterclass on dumping an ex, this is it! WATCH HERE –>
Last year saw the huge underground success of UK dubstep star Breakage’s remix of Over, which has so far notched up over 150,000 plays on Youtube, and was included on his own album Foundation. Following on from this there are 2 brand new remixes coming out to accompany the single release.
First o! we have Deux Freq, the new alias of remixer-du-jour Deadly Weapons, who has lent his sound to the likes of Usher, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift. Here he presents his darker side with a big room dubstep remix which is sure to please fans of the genre. Just make sure you listen to it really loud!
Next o! we are really excited to introduce one of the UK’s finest new dance music talents, Toby ioi. Ioi’s UK Funky/bassline sound has been championed by the likes of Radio 1, Choice FM and Kiss. With credits including such diverse names as Tricky, Massive Attack, and Grammy nominee Tippa Irie, Toby ioi’s name is becoming impossible to ignore in the UK Funky scene.
